Canada Deposit Codes, Decoded

Canadian banks compress government payments into four cryptic labels: Canada FPT, PRO, RIT and FED. Here's what each one means, which program is actually paying you, and how to confirm it in under a minute.

The short version

What do Canada's government deposit codes mean?

4labels cover nearly every deposit

Canadian banks use 4 short labels for government money: Canada FPT for federal-provincial-territorial credits like the CCB, Canada PRO for provincial programs like the Ontario Trillium Benefit, Canada RIT for tax refunds, and Canada FED for other federal payments.

The method

How do you identify a mystery deposit?

Three checks identify any government deposit, in order of speed. Most people never need the third one.

Match the date

Government programs run on fixed calendars. A deposit near the 20th points to the CCB, the 10th to Ontario Trillium, the 5th of a quarter month to the Groceries Benefit. Our master calendar lists them all.

Match the amount

Each program has published maximums, and a genuine deposit won't sit above them. The decoder pages for each label show the amount ranges per program for the July 2026 benefit year.

Confirm in CRA My Account

Every CRA payment appears in My Account with its program name, amount and date. It's the definitive answer when a deposit still doesn't add up, and it takes 2 minutes.

The reason

Why don't banks show the program name?

Direct deposits travel with a short sender descriptor, and the CRA batches dozens of programs through shared payment streams. The descriptor identifies the stream, not the program, so your bank prints Canada FPT because that's genuinely all it knows. The CRA knows exactly which benefit paid you; the label your bank shows is wholesale plumbing; it isn't the answer.

That's the whole reason this section of the site exists. The schedules on our Canada benefit payment calendar tell you when money arrives, and the decoder pages tell you what a label means once it lands. Together they answer the two questions behind nearly every benefit search: when does it come, and what was that deposit.

Quick answers

Deposit code questions, answered

Are these government deposits taxable?
Almost never. The credits behind FPT and PRO are tax free, and a Canada RIT deposit is your own tax refund, which isn't income. The one caution sits under FED: certain federal programs it carries, like Advanced Canada Workers Benefit payments, connect to taxable amounts on your return.
Why did I get a Canada RIT deposit when I didn't file recently?
The CRA reassessed a past return. Reassessments happen months or years after filing, when the CRA matches slips, processes an adjustment you requested, or corrects an error. You'll find the notice in CRA My Account explaining the exact change behind the money.
What's the difference between Canada FED and Canada FPT?
FPT covers credits with a provincial-territorial component bundled in, while FED carries purely federal payments. In practice the split isn't consistent: certain banks label the same CCB payment FPT and others show FED, so the date and amount identify the program more reliably than the label.
Do all banks use the same deposit labels?
No. The big banks mostly show these 4 codes, but credit unions and online banks sometimes print fuller descriptions like Canada Child Benefit directly. That's why two people receiving the same benefit can see different labels on their statements.
I received a small deposit I can't identify. What now?
Check CRA My Account first; every benefit and refund the CRA sends appears there with its exact amount and date. A deposit that doesn't show in CRA My Account came from somewhere else, like a provincial ministry paying directly, and Service Canada's account covers CPP, OAS and EI.
